The New York Times confirms that the R&B artist passed away following surgery in Coral Gables, Florida, according to his wife and long-time manager, Joyce Moore.

Sam Moore’s personal life

Sam Moore was born in Miami on October 12, 1935. After meeting Dave Prater, who would later become her driving partner, she started singing professionally in 1950. In 1961, they rejoined at Miami's King of Hearts Club and quickly started performing together. The two were given a job offer by Atlantic Records in 1964 after they had an audition.

Sam Moore’s solo album, Plenty Good Lovin', was released in 2002 after the two parted ways in 1970.  When their individual careers did not achieve the level of success they desired, they would split up and then get back together multiple times during their careers.

According to The New York Times, the two never communicated again after their final performance together on New Year's Eve 1981 in San Francisco.

They both battled a heroin addiction at about the same period. She eventually became his manager after meeting Joyce McRae, who encouraged him to take part in anti-opiate treatment trials. He came clean about his addiction by 1983 and began helping others who were dealing with the same problem.

Bruce Springsteen is among the many musicians Sam Moore has toured with during his solo career. Prater recruited a new partner, Sam Daniels, and they started working together as Sam & Dave in spite of Moore's protests. The original pair was admitted to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1992. Prater died in an automobile accident six years later.

The pair received the Grammy Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2019. Moore's wife Joyce, daughter Michelle, and grandchildren Tash and Misha survive him.
