Casey White, a dangerous inmate who escaped from prison in April 2022 with the help of a female guard with whom he was having a romantic affair, has been convicted in the United States.
Their incredible escape had all the makings of a movie. He, the dangerous criminal with a sordid past, she, the prison guard a few days from retirement, who had fallen under his spell, had fled together one day in April 2022. At the time, their faces were displayed everywhere in the American media, while the police were actively looking for them.
The situation was all the more worrying because the man was armed. It took eleven days on the run between Alabama and Indiana for the authorities to finally find the trace of the two fugitives. Following a final chase, Casey White was arrested while Vicky White, (they had the same last name but were not related) was found dead of a gunshot to the head. A tragic outcome that American justice examined last week.
Life sentence
Casey White was indicted in July 2022. Among the charges against him, he agreed to plead guilty to the escape as part of a deal with the prosecutor allowing him not to be tried for murder, says CNN . He was thus sentenced to life in prison. “Vicky White's family has accepted this and they are happy with the sentence,” said Assistant District Attorney Angie Hamilton .
“I feel like the most hated man in the world,” he told the court, according to WHNT . “I loved Vicky and I would never sully her name for anyone in this room,” he added. She allegedly killed herself when her accomplice was arrested. “Vicky got me out (of prison, editor’s note) because she always said: right is right, wrong is wrong. She was the first person to show me affection. The first to hold me in her arms in six years.”
The defendant's heavy criminal record
It was under the eyes of the administration that the two lovers fled. Vicky White came to pick up the prisoner by car claiming she had to take him to a court hearing. Authorities revealed at the time that the two had been having an affair for 2 years.
Vicky White allegedly sold her house for $100,000 a month before helping the prisoner escape, and emptying all his accounts. She also allegedly purchased a 2007 Forde Edge, in which the two fled. The car was found empty a few days later. According to the criminal's testimony, they intended to start a new life together
At the time of his escape, Casey White was imprisoned after being sentenced to 75 years in prison in 2015 for a series of crimes. The profile of Casey Cole White aged 38, was all the more worrying because he allegedly promised, if he was released again, to kill his ex-girlfriend, forcing her to live under protection.
During the run, the US Marshals in charge of the investigation also revealed several photos of the fugitive. We see in particular his tattoos, distinctive signs of belonging to a gang of white supremacists from Alabama, the Southern Brotherhood. He still faces trial for a murder that occurred in 2015.
